  • DIY Tutorial: Vellum Wedding Invitations

We’re loving vellum wedding invitations this year – they’re different, fun, and super easy to DIY! I’m going to walk you step-by-step through choosing a design and how to print invitations at home. Gorgeous, budget friend wedding invitations coming right up!

Vellum Wedding Invitations you can DIY!

    What you’ll need*:

How to DIY vellum wedding invitations

Picking a Design to Print on Vellum

When it comes to wedding invitations, there are so many choices for design. If you want to use vellum, we recommend choosing something simple. Designs without a colored background and single, dark ink color work best. Black is the safest choice, although other dark colors can work well too!

Stay away from designs with photos, lots of artwork, and fully colored background if you’re DIY printing vellum invitations. Not only do they use a lot of ink, but vellum is pretty delicate and you don’t want to push the paper. If you do want vellum wedding invitations with a little more something-something, we recommend outsourcing printing to the pros! This company does a great job printing on vellum.

How to Print Invitations on Vellum Paper

If you’re using one of our invitation design templates, download your edited design as a PDF. Set up multiple per page and select to add the crop marks.

Your printer settings will depend on the computer and software you use. I’m using a Mac and printing from Adobe Acrobat. Every printer is a little bit different, just make sure you “fit to page” to get the correct sizing.

Insert the paper into the printer and print! I always recommend going through the full process with a sample before printing everything, just in case you need to make adjustments to the size, color, or settings. (You don’t want to print your entire set of invitations twice, I promise).

    Printing Vellum Wedding Invitations

Pro Tips for Printing on Vellum:

    • Handle the vellum carefully and try to only touch it on the edges. Your fingers can sometimes leave prints on the paper from the oils in your skin.
    • Let you design dry before you start trimming the paper. The ink can smear and transfer to other pieces of vellum. It doesn’t need a ton of time, a couple minutes should be safe!
    • Heat can cause the paper to curl, so let your printer take a break after printing 10 sheets to cool down.

    Cutting Vellum Invitations

You’ll definitely need a paper trimmer to cut your vellum wedding invitations. It takes a couple tries to get it right, always print extras for practice!

Use the crop marks on the paper to line up under the trimmer blade. You’ll have to do less cutting if you trim the larger edges first (two birds, one stone deal).

    DIY Wedding Invitations

Pro Tip: Clear out any extra paper that gets left in the blade trough/gutter or else it will force the paper to crinkle up on the next cut.

If you’re using the paper trimmer we recommend, they have a handy guide for standard sizes like 5×7 to make sure you’re getting it right!

Tips for DIY Vellum Wedding Invitations

Once you’ve cut your paper, I recommend storing it under a book or set of books, so it doesn’t curl up.

Pair your vellum invitation with a piece of cardstock to make the envelope a bit thicker and add a pop of color. Use a photo printed on cardstock with save the dates!

  • Meet the Designer

Hi there, I’m Steph! Font fanatic, paper nerd, and lover of snail mail.

I started someday paper co, this invitation template shop, in April 2020 at the start of quarantine. I’ve worked with couples one-on-one designing wedding invitations for over six years in my other business, oh my! designs. Starting a template shop has been an idea of mine for quite some time, but it wasn’t until the shifts in the industry happened that I had the free time, and perspective, to go for it!

    The Idea

Both businesses co-exist together and creating templates allows me to design for more couples which I’m beyond excited about. With the one-on-one service, I’m only able to serve a limited number of clients each year. Most of these couples use luxury printing methods and have a nice invitation budget – they know paper is the first impression of their big day, and one of the only things you get to keep, and are excited to invest into an experience and amazing product.

Not everyone has the budget, or even the desire, to invest into their wedding stationery. I get it – weddings can be expensive and you might be trying to have some dolla-dolla bills left over for a dream honeymoon or a down payment for a home. There’s no shame in balling on a budget and I wanted to find a way to serve those couples alongside my full service clients!

In order to preserve the brand standard for oh my! designs, I do not offer the semi-custom designs in that collection as printable templates.

    The Inspiration

With the templates, I really wanted to create from my current place of inspiration.

I moved from Atlanta, Georgia to San Diego, California about two years ago and the west coast vibe has been a major influence in what I create. I love modern and minimalist designs with a hint of boho flair. The coastal, effortless, easy feel is something I love in not only invitations, but weddings themselves, fashion, and home decor!

I’ve been inspired to create in everything from typography on a Kombucha can to color palettes in a high end taco joint (looking at you, Tocaya!) Inspiration really is everywhere …and San Diego isn’t a bad place to soak it in!

Stay in the loop for new designs and expanded offerings in the future!

    About Me

Tacos, smoothies, and long walks on the beach – yep, that’s the jist of it! But in all seriousness, I eat tacos at least twice a week (often more!) and have a smoothie daily – that’s balance, right?

I moved to San Diego after dating my boyfriend long distance – we met at a wedding!

We live about 10 minutes from the beach and try to go watch a sunset at least once a week. It’s a reminder of how small we are in this big universe and you need that every so often!

When I’m not designing, you can find me planning my next trip or watching a documentary. I’m a huge sucker for The Bachelor – and really any love story, including yours!

I’m a big believer in creating a life you love and taking chances (calculated risks!). Do good in the world and have fun doing it – yolo, am I right?!

That’s enough about me, head over to the shop to check out my designs!

  • Fall Wedding Invitations Inspiration

Fall weddings are my favorite for so many reasons. When it comes to invitations, there are so many ways to play with fall colors and bring in the season. For 2020, we’re majorly crushing on burnt orange – also it’s friends rust, copper, and terracotta. There’s also mustard which pairs so perfectly with many colors and has a great fall feel. Here are some favorite fall wedding invitation designs this year!

All invitations are designed as templates so you can customize on your own! Read more about how it works here.

    Dusty Orange Sunburst

This dusty orange wedding invitation suite is perfect for a modern fall desert wedding. That being said, we love it for any wedding with boho vibes using rust or copper details. Change the fonts and wording to fit your needs!

    Burnt Orange and Dusty Rose

The theme of our fall collection – don’t be afraid to play with color! We love the burnt orange and dusty rose combo, but you can customize to match your wedding color palette.

    Sage and Mustard

If you’re having an elegant fall wedding, these minimal floral invitations are perfect. Mustard is having a major moment this year in weddings and bringing it in with the details card is a great way to add a pop of color.

    Burgundy and Mustard

It’s not full fall wedding inspiration without including a burgundy invitation! You might notice this is the same design as mentioned above, we just changed the background colors and fonts – a design so nice, we had to feature it twice!

    Dusty Blue

Let’s be honest, dusty blue works for a wedding of any season. It’s been my most popular color for invitations going on two years now and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Couples are using this slate blue color for wedding details and invitations. This modern design is clean and simple and with the white background, an easy option if you want to print at home!

    Blush and Orange

This modern template can be customized in ANY color, but the light blush and burnt orange combination is so lovely for fall wedding invitations. Equal parts modern and boho, it gives such a whimsical feel.

All invitation templates include a full suite – that means not only the invite, but RSVP card and details insert too! You can even try a free demo of each design to see what you can customize and pick your favorite before purchase.

  • Invitation Templates: How it Works

If you’re wondering how the heck invitation templates work – prepare to be amazed. It’s the easiest process and, dare I say, fun to use a template for designing invitations.

We wanted to create a stress free experience from start to finish. Here’s what that looks like:

    Yes, it’s really that easy!

    Immediate Access

After you purchase the design, you’ll receive an email from our partner Corjl with a link to access your template. (If you don’t see an email after 10 minutes, check your spam folder!)

You can get started on edits right away, no software or downloads required. Instant gratification makes everyone happy, right?

    Customize Your Template

The pieces you can edit within each template are a little different, we highly recommend giving it a test run before purchase to make sure the customization options fit your needs. Every design has a demo so you can try before you buy – totally free! You can find the link to the demo in the design’s listing description.

In every design, you can change the fonts and wording. Colors of text and background can also be customized! The artwork within the designs is usually not editable, but try the demo to see firsthand.

    Save the Date Template Download

Full editing instructions are sent with each template purchase. You can also view Corjl’s step-by-step video tutorials here!

Make sure to save your designs throughout the process. If you ever want to start over, just click “revert to original”.

    Download Designs

After you’ve proofread your designs, save, then download! You’ll have options to choose a JPG or PDF file with or without a bleed.

If you’re sending digitally, choose JPG.If you’re planning to print, choose PDF. Most professional printers will ask for your file in the default size, with a bleed.

Not sure what you need? Each order has 5 downloads, so you can get a version of each to see what works best!

    Printing Invitations

We highly recommend using our printing partner, Prints of Love, for a totally seamless and stress free experience. Not only is their printing high quality, but they ship orders in 2-3 business days and include envelopes! No need to source your own paper and become a professional at home printer, they take care of everything for you!

If you don’t want to use Prints of Love, there’s no hard feelings. Our second best recommendation is to send the files to a local print shop. Although they might not provide envelopes, we bet they’ve done this before and will still do a fabulous job. Plus, it’s always a bonus to support local, small businesses! We’re definitely here for that.

The last option is to print your invitations at home, DIY style. Find yourself some great cardstock, fill up those ink cartridges, and invest in a nice paper trimmer (this one does a great job!). Our templates can be downloaded with multiple to page (as allowed) to save on paper and trim marks can be added to guide your cutting. Printer settings will vary, but make sure the file is set at 100% or “Actual Size” for best results.

There’s no shame in DIY-ing your printing! We do want to note that designs with a full flood background, like the below, do best professionally printed.

Our templates are to be easy, the hard part is going to be choosing which one you want to use!
